Following the rollout of a new mandate from The Joint Commission, accredited hospitals with labor and delivery services are required to use specific naming conventions to identify newborn patients.
Because newborns can’t self-identify and hospitals often have multiple babies with the same birth date, this new measure helps prevent medical errors in some of the most vulnerable patients.
